Updates from the Burnaby Board of Trade

Changes to Employment Insurance – Changes to make it easier for workers to get benefits and employers to reduce hours while keeping staff

Supports for Individuals/Workers – The Emergency Care Benefit, Enhanced Canada Child Benefit, and GST Bonus Credit will provide additional financial support federally, and the BC Emergency Benefit for Workers will provide $1000 payments

Travel Restrictions – The Canada-US border has been closed; Visits by non-citizens/permanent residents banned; Canadian international travel severely restricted

10% Wage Subsidy for Businesses – Immediate subsidy for small businesses to cover 10% of wages for up to 3 months. This subsidy will cover a maximum of $1,375 per employee and $25,000 in total per employer and is available immediately.

Extended Work-Sharing Program – The Government of Canada is Implementing the EI Work Sharing Program, which provides EI benefits to workers who agree to reduce their normal working hour as a result of developments beyond the control of their employers, by extending the eligibility of such agreements to 76 weeks, easing eligibility requirements, and streamlining the application process.

Business Credit Availability Program – The federal government has announced $10 billion in funding for establishing a Business Credit Availability Program which will provide working capital loans of up to $2 million with flexible terms and payment postponements for up to 6 months for qualifying businesses will be made available. This funding can be used to pay leases/rent, utilities, wages payable and other obligations.

Delay Income Tax Payments – Canada Revenue Agency will allow all businesses to defer, until after August 31, 2020, the payment of any income tax amounts that become owing on or after today and before September 2020.

Covid-19 and the Workplace: What Employers Need to Know – Written by Kent Employment Law, this article provides some guidance to business owners and executives in terms of their obligations in reference to employment standards and appropriate guidelines for various employee-related scenarios.
